Do Waist Trainers Really Work? How to Get Your Best Results

When you think of a corset, you may envision a garment that holds in your waist and creates an hourglass silhouette. Although a corset or body shaper can instantly give you a tighter waistline, it may also deliver lasting results. A waist trainer encourages your abdominal muscles to develop in a way that produces a flat stomach and streamlined love handles. 

History of the Waist Trainer

Corsets became fashionable in Europe during the sixteenth century and had their heyday in the Victorian era. These stiff undergarments converted the torso into an upside-down cone shape. They were constructed with laces that could be tightened to produce an even slimmer shape.

Corsets helped improve the posture and hold the back straight. However, the tight corseting led to serious health problems, including fainting spells and damage to internal organs. Over time, it evolved into a looser, more flexible garment.

Modern corsets are much more comfortable, and they're safer to wear. They're often made from latex and other flexible fabrics. While you can still find corsets with steel boning, most waist shapers tend to be more accommodating these days.

Everyone gets something different out of waist training. The results depend on the type of garment that you wear, your size, your genetics, and your lifestyle.

You'll see instant results as soon as you put on the shaper. However, the long-term results depend on how committed you are to waist training. You'll see better results the longer you wear the garment and the tighter it is. However, it's not always convenient or safe to wear a waist shaper around the clock.

Your Trainer Should Fit Properly

A shaper that's too loose won't compress your abdomen enough to produce results. At the same time, a garment that's too tight can interfere with your breathing and cause you pain. You should aim for somewhere in the middle.

If you can't breathe or feel pain, the shaper is too small. Getting an hourglass figure should not be an excruciating process. Still, you might feel slight discomfort as you get used to wearing a cincher. 

For waist shapers that have hook-and-eye closures, you should feel tight cinching in the waist when you have the third hook closed. The shaper should close properly. If you bulge out of the top or bottom, you might want to go up a size. If the top or bottom of the garment rolls over itself, it is probably too small.

Get Used to the Trainer Gradually

Don't expect to comfortably wear a trainer all day if you're just starting out. You should begin by wearing the garment for an hour or two the first day and working up from there.

While some people sleep in these products, others don't recommend it. Your body needs a break. If you choose to wear your garment overnight, you might be more comfortable in the flexible kind that doesn't have steel boning.

Try Gentle Exercises

Once you have become accustomed to wearing this type of garment, you might want to try a gentle workout. Exercises that allow you to lie on the floor may be better than upright cardio. You don't want to get dizzy because you can't get enough oxygen.

Try doing yoga, Pilates, or an abdominal workout to bring awareness to your posture and core strength.

The most common types are the off-the-rack shapers. These may have plastic boning, or they might just be large bands of stretchy material. The types that secure with hook-and-eye closures usually have three rows of fasteners. As you lose inches, you can close the shaper on a tighter setting.

Some waist cinchers close with hook-and-loop, or Velcro, straps. These are extremely versatile because they can be finely tuned to your size. However, this type of shaper tends to be bulkier than some others.

Corsets can be purchased in many sizes. You'll have to measure your waist to find the perfect fit. You can also purchase custom corsets, but these may be more expensive than you want to spend.

If you're just starting out with these garments, you might want to purchase an affordable option off the rack. You tend to lose more inches initially. You may not want to pay big bucks for something that won't fit in a few months. If you're looking to maintain the hourglass that you've developed by using a waist shaper, you might want to splurge on a custom-made item that's comfortable and fits you perfectly.

Should You Use a Waist Trainer?

The best waist trainer is comfortable and doesn't hurt when you wear it. It also fits snugly enough to give you the shape that you desire. 

A waist shaper can work, but don't expect miracles. If you were to put a band around a water balloon, what would happen to its volume? It would extend out the top and bottom of the band. Your fat and soft tissues do the same thing when you wear a waist shaper.

Depending on your size and desired results, you may want to try gaining muscle and reducing fat to achieve the look you want. Likewise, if you're always eating foods that make you feel full and look bloated, you might not get quick results. Plus, you may experience additional discomfort when wearing the product.

A waist cincher is ideal for providing support, holding in lumpy areas, and giving you a defined shape. If you are willing to wear it for approximately 8 hours a day, you may notice that your body changes even when you're not wearing the garment. However, the effects will gradually fade away if you stop wearing it, just like your shape will progressively change if you stop working out.
